Location: San Mateo County, California

The Society of St. Vincent de Paul’s (SVdP) Restorative Justice Ministry carries out the mission of providing pastoral care and coordinating services to those detained in adult and juvenile correctional facilities in San Mateo County under the jurisdiction of the San Mateo County Sheriff's Office or the San Mateo County Superior Court, and beyond the County of San Mateo (when appropriate) in facilities operated by the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation.

Duties

As institutional access allows, and as duties are defined by SVdP, the Restorative Justice Chaplain provides pastoral care to those detained in adult and juvenile facilities in San Mateo County and at San Quentin State Prison. Duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Providing one-on-one pastoral care
  • Visiting the incarcerated one-on-one in their pods or cells
  • Facilitating small group discussions
  • Leading scripture studies or Centering Prayer
  • Communicating with other denominations
  • Assisting in making available Bibles, religious literature, and materials

Qualifications

Knowledge of Restorative Justice founding principles and current practices. Ability to deal effectively and openly with residents, employees, and volunteers while achieving positive results.

Education

Advanced study in theology and human services, or any combination of experience or training that demonstrates possession of the required skills and abilities.
