Executive Director

The Society of St. Vincent de Paul, Particular Council of San Mateo County, established in 1931 and incorporated in 1964 is a not for profit Roman Catholic lay organization made up of men, women and youth who provide a variety of services to those in need throughout the entire County. There are three main programs: 1. SVdP’s Safety Net Programs – SVdP’s Peninsula Family Resource Center made up of 35 Conferences (small working groups of volunteers/staff established in Catholic parishes) who serve the precariously housed regardless of creed, gender, age and ethnicity; and SVdP’s 3 Homeless Help Centers (in San Mateo, Redwood City and South San Francisco); 2. SVdP’s Restorative Justice Chaplaincy Ministry that with the assistance of volunteers, ministers to victims, the detained and also provides post release services for adults and juveniles, and; SVdP’s Catherine Center holistic (body, mind, soul and spirit) residential program for up to 19 women who have been released from incarceration organized in two phases for up to two years, and SVdP Stores Operation that through four stores (RWC, SM, SB and SSF) that recycle and resell gently used donations of clothing and furniture, provide free or low cost merchandise to the needy, and provide rehabilitation employment.

The Executive Director will have the responsibility of managing activities related to the planning, execution, control and evaluation of SVdP’s mission advancement and engagement as directed by SVdP’s Governance entities. Excellent communication (verbal and non-verbal), organizational and interpersonal skills are required. As SVdP is in the business of assisting those on the margin who are on the downside of fortunate, we are looking for a passionate, enthusiastic and joyful individual to join our team.

Examples of duties through strategic and visionary leadership include:

• Developing and implementing strategies for short and long range planning as directed by Governance
• Organizing and overseeing with appropriate business acumen, the internal controls of a not-for profit
• Attracting, motivating, inspiring and supervising volunteers and management hires for the purposes of Mission advancement
• Directing and Leading by functioning as staff to the District Council, Board, assigned Committees and Management Staff.
• Controlling by evaluating, drafting or modifying policies as they pertain to personnel, external controls and community stakeholders.

Qualifications include education and work history that demonstrates an understanding of not-for-profit management (or equivalent management experience) preferably in a faith based organization, and an ability to work with a governance structure that includes a District Council and Board of Directors. Also required is high personal integrity, presence, innovative thinking, authenticity of purpose, and strong social and emotional intelligence. Ability to be a team player with other dedicated volunteers and staff is essential to ensure that efforts are consistent with the overall mission and philosophy of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul.

Progressively responsible business, personnel and financial management experience and knowledge of Catholic Church teachings, social justice issues required. Baptized, active and engaged member of the Roman-Catholic faith preferred.

SVdP’s Catherine Center Relief Staff (Part-Time)

SVdP’s Catherine Center is a transitional place of safety and dignity for women to live and heal upon leaving incarceration. We seek compassionate individuals who can be present to our women when the program manager is not available ( nights, holidays and weekends). Duties include supervising activities on and off site, keeping case notes, being a kind and listening presence to the residents, maintaining a safe and supportive atmosphere, coordinating activities that promote a healthy lifestyle ( such as weekend walks), communicating with the program staff, and transporting and accompanying the women to worship services and community events, as needed, The ideal candidate has experience working with those in recovery, an open heart and excellent communication skills.
